Today is International Women’s Day. Women have made countless contributions to society since the dawn of (wo)mankind. And all we get is a dinky single day to celebrate??? But we are getting off topic…
We celebrated by reading stories from the book, Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls 2. Alvin suggested that we make Lego figures to match the photos in the book. Allana wholehearted agreed and got to work.
We chose to represent Eleanor Roosevelt, an American politician who championed for human rights and was the wife of former US president Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Allana loves math, so she wanted to also showcase Maryam Mirzakhani, who is from Iran and is the first woman ever to be awarded the most prestigious award for mathematics.
Lastly, because astronauts are simply the coolest, we also made a Lego figure of Samantha Cristoforetti, who is from Italy and had conducted more than 200 experiments at the International Space Station.
These women and others in the book were all trail-blazers in their own right. Their stories are well worth the read!
