Today we are celebrating a trifecta of holidays: World Braille Day, Trivia Day, and National Spaghetti Day!
World Braille Day
Today is the first Braille Day in celebration! It was set up by the United Nations to recognize those with vision impairments and to advocate for a shared, accessible written language as a human right.
According to the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB): “Braille is a system of raised dots that can be read with the fingers by people who are blind or who have low vision … Braille is not a language. Rather, it is a code by which many languages—such as English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and dozens of others—may be written and read.” Allana has never heard of Braille prior to this celebration, so this celebration was a good way to introduce her to it.
Trivia Day
Today is also Trivia Day. Trivia are little bits of information that have varying degrees of importance. We were trading trivia earlier today. Feel free to share!
Me: Whales are the largest mammal on earth!
Allana: Did you know that birds are related to dinosaurs?
Caden: Ahhhhh!
Can’t beat that!
National Spaghetti Day
Last but not least, today is also National Spaghetti Day in the United States. Crazy Americans–there are so many things to celebrate and commemorate, and someone came up with spaghetti. Not that we’re complaining! Pasta with marinara sauce is a staple in our house. There are 50 gazillion spaghetti recipes online, with every variation you can think of. And every family has its own recipe, whether it’s made from scratch or poured from a jar. Whatever way it’s done, we add our super secret ingredient: cinnamon, which makes the sauce taste more like chili.
Buon appetito! Or perhaps I should say 吃个美餐 since noodles are believe to have originated in China!
Excellent idea, Allana. Your blog will surely generate intellectual curiosity among readers.
